Shoplifting is a crime, and the amount that you are accused of taking puts you in the category of a more serious crime. Anything over $200.00 that is shoplifted takes the case out of the local municipal court and puts it in the county superior court for disposition. The potential penalties if you are convicted are heavy fines, potentially some jail time, potentially some loss of your driving privelges, and you would have a criminal record. In addition to this you would forever be banned from going into any Macy's or risk having another criminal charge against you for defiant trespass. I will say though that a lot of times the cases are sent back down from the county prosecutor to the municipal court for disposition if the amount in question is relatively low, like yours seem to be. I think that you should certainly hire a lawyer to try to either get the case dismissed if that is at all possible or to try and minimize the damage against you if you are convicted. I am an attorney who has handled many cases similar to yours in various courts throughout New Jersey in the past. I would like to discuss your case with you in more detail. Please contact me to discuss your case. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.

Due to the amount, you are currently facing felony criminal charges. I suggest you get an attorney ASAP as it is possible to deal with the charges before they get too far. The charges can be dismissed or downgraded back down to municipal court. If you wait until you are indicted, it is too late to try to turn things around and your options at that point will be more limited.

Furthermore, with regard to these types of cases, there are always issues involving the store employees and their procedures. Thus, a good attorney can exploit them and use them to support an argument for dismissal.

My initial consultations are always free, so call me at 732/247/3340 and we can discuss the case.
