Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey
What is the worst that can happen to a 17 year old that was found with a knife in his backpack? it was never brandished nor was it used for any violence/mischief. It was there for protective purposes and not handled until the officer came across it in his backpack.

Why was the officer searching your backpack? It is difficult to answer that question when you have not said exactly what you have been charged with, or if you have been even charged with anything? Was the knife taken by the Officer? where were you at the time of the search? have you been charged with possession of a weapon? What are the circumstances surrounding the situation? There obviously must be more to the story? please feel free to contact me to discuss, I never charge a fee to speak with someone. (201)-894-9498
Having a knife for defensive purposes is no different than having it for offensive purposes. Having the knife with the intent to use against another person is a crime.
I would need to know more details before I could give yo a definite answer, however possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose is a serious crime and could result in some very harsh penalties including high fines, being charged as an adult, and possible jail time. Please contact me to discuss your case in more detail. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.
