Legal Question in Discrimination Law in New Jersey
Fired because Mental Health was placed in Question
Ok, here's the story: I've been working for a company for not very long at all (3 weeks). I was fired recently, but never given a reason, only that my employer claimed I wasn't 'gelling' with my group. I'm one man, working with 8 other women, which might have been a reason. I don't think it is. Last week, I accidentally let it slip out while having an after work conversation with my supervisor that I'm bipolar. It actually came up in conversation as well earlier on the day that I was fired (not by her, but by her boss). I made a joke about it, as it's never been a problem. Immediately after this, she and my supervisor were in a meeting for 30-45 minutes. At the end of the day, I was informed by my supervisor's boss that I was being let go. I thought it was because I accidentally made some sort of a joke that offended someone or something. She said no. I asked what it was, and she simply replied that I wasn't gelling with the group, that she had a good sense about these kind of things, and that I just wasn't fitting in. I had, as far as I know, no complaints from my supervisor up until this point, nor from my co-workers. I've been fired before but this is the first time that I've felt it was unjustifiable and wrong.
