Legal Question in DUI Law in New Jersey
Drivers License Surcharge
I got a drunk driving(no accident- my tire touched the yellow line by an inch) ticket in '84 in NJ and have not had a license since then. When I went to get my license back in '97 the drivers Lic. rest. fee was $20. I paid off all my tickets(3) and the $20 fee and now they tell me I have to pay a $3000 retoration surcharge fee. This happened over 14 years ago. Is there a statute of limitations on this or something? Now I have a license from another state -cause I live in another state and they are telling me to pay(LDScollection from Nj) or I can be arrested. The state I got the new license from did not send me anything stating I was being revoked here. What can I do?

Re: Drivers License Surcharge
Statute of Limitations is not applicable to this situation. I regret to tell you that the only way to clear this matter from your record is to pay the fee. That's the bad news. The good news, such as it is, is that you cannot be arrested for mere failure to pay the fee. You can, however, be arrested for driving in New Jersey, where your driving privileges remain suspended, even though you have a valid license in another state.
On an unrelated note, please note that my zip code on my "signature" line is incorrect. The correct zip code is 08903. I will be correcting my signature line right away, but was unable to get it corrected in time to do any good on this message.
