Legal Question in Entertainment Law in New Jersey

self publishing

I am going to self publish a children's book and have hired someone to illustrate it. I want to include him in profits from the book but I'm not sure how that works. Should I get back all my investment first before he profits since I'm fronting all the money to self publish and paying him to illustrate it??? Thanks you

Re: self publishing

Is his payment solely tied to a percentage of sales, or will he also be receiving a flat fee for his work?

You can be as creative as you want, depending upon how generous your illustrator wants to be, but generally I would expect the illustrator be receive a percentage of sales right off the bat.
