Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

My 15 year old decided to live with his father on a recent summer visitation and is in another state. My ex is saying that I should now be paying him Child Support, but what if my son wants to come back home after a few months? I still need to keep residency for him and can't do that if I have to now do without CS and have to pay my ex on top of it.
