Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Not sure

I am 39 years old and live in New Jersey. When my mother became pregnant in 1968 my biological father denied paternity (they were not married). He is not on my birth certificate. He has never paid any support at all. I believe I grew up poor because of this. I have contacted him over the years but our relationship has always been hard. Around 1996, he gave me $100,000.00 gift of equity in a house. He told me it would be my inheritance so I bought the house, he told me sign a note for the $100,000.00 to protect myself but not to worry he doesnt want it back. So two years later his lawyer sent me a letter demanding the $100,000.00 back so I had to sell the house and gave it back to him.

He has a girlfriend and no living relatives. Is there any financial responsibility from the past, now or in the future regarding any inheritance or the $100,000. that I would be entitled to?

Thank you

Re: Not sure

Your biggest problem is laches, which is a legal word for delay. As soon as you bring anything to court, he will likely use the defense of laches and the court may dismiss your claim. Of course, this is just my opinion.
