Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Adoption of spouses child

In the state of New Jersey, how do I legally adopt my wifes 4 year old daughter, where the biological father left at the time of birth and has never been heard from or seen since? I met my wife 4 months after she had the child and we were married on Jan 20th of 2000.

Thank you for your help.

Re: Adoption of spouses child

An action (lawsuit) is brought via the County Surrogate's Office for adoption with notice to the birth father. If no objection is made the adoption can go through rather smoothly. If the birth father objects, a trial would be held to determine whether the adoption would be in the child's best interests based on a variety of factors.
