The closer a child is to being an adult the greater weight the child's desire's have. This makes sense. What is the value of the wishes of a four year old who has no idea of what is going on?
If the child is fourteen and older, roughly, the child's wishes have more weight, but other considerations are also important.

There is no hard and fast rule in NJ, but as Mr. Moore said, 14 is a good age to start. If the child is 16, its pretty much whatever they say. You'll have a hard time getting a judge to listen to anything else unless you can show something really, really bad.
