Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

What age does child support stop

My divorce agreement says have to pay child support till ''the child is 18 or finishes school, whichever occurslast''.

My daughter decided in April of last year (she was supposed to graduate in May) that she no longer wanted to be teacher. She picked a career that required her to do another year of school. She is 23 years old, and Idont feel I should have to pay 'child support' for her any longer. She worked all summer full time earning more an hour than I do. When can I stop paying child support for her?

Re: What age does child support stop

Your agreement could have been drafted better. Nevertheless, I can see an argument being made that the term "finishes school" is limited to high school, or at worst, high school and four years of college. Further, if you are paying for some schooling, you may be entitled to pay less child support, if you can't get it stopped completely. Keep in mind that this advice is based purely on the little bit of information that you have given to me. There certainly may be other factors that would change my opinion. Further, no one can rely on advice from an attorney who has not been retained. Since it appears that you have not retained an attorney, you may want to contact an attorney (either me or someone else) to discuss your matter in more detail. Only then will you be able to rely on the advice. I will be happy to assist you. However, you need to call me at 856-546-8010. Good luck! Rob
