Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

''Age limit for children's right to speak to the Judge ''

I am looking for any information in regards to the age limit, in the State of New Jersey, that a child could speak to the Judge as to which parent they wish to reside with. Everytime I search online, i get many different age limits ranging from age 7-13. Please advise. thank you for your time, Julio.

Each case is unique and thereby the importance of

a child's preference will vary from case to case.

Generally, the closer the child's age is to eighteen years the more weight it will be afforded by the judge, but there other factors

which the judge must consider in resolving the

custody question.

I think the 7-14 common law rule is a good rule of thumb for most judges. 0 to 7, the Judge probably isn't going to even hear from the child, 7-14, the judge will listen to the child, 14-18, absent some odd circumstances, custody is entirely the child's call in that their say goes. Of course, that's just a rule of thumb and each case is different.
