Alimony can be short term or long term. That depends on the length of the marriage. The marital standard of living and income disparity are the key factors in setting the amount. Keep in mind that 98% of divorces settle so this could be included in your settlement. If you are going through a divorce, I suggest you at least speak with an attorney.

The judge makes the decision. Alimony is for a dependent spouse whose long term marriage is terminated.
