Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey
Back child support and Parental right termination
Hi, I am a 23 year old mother to a 6 year old boy. My son's father owes over $11,000 in child support, and he has never met our child. My fiancee has been raising my son since he was a year old. I have spoken to the bio-dad's mother, and she said the bio-dad would be willing to give up his parental rights, so that my fiancee can adopt him, once we are married. Can I legally make a deal with him regarding the back child support, say if he pays me half, we can have it dropped? I'm not sure how it works, or what we can do, to atleast get some of the money that is owed to our son.

Re: Back child support and Parental right termination
What you are asking about can be done. I have actually done two of them already. There is a substantial amount of paper work, but it is possible.
Keep in mind that this advice is given based on the little bit of information that you have
provided in your question. My advice may change based on other information. Further, no one
can rely on advice from an attorney who has not been retained. You cannot rely on this advice
because we have not personally met and you have not retained me as an attorney. If you have not
already done so, you should immediately meet with a Family Law attorney for a full consultation
before you take any further steps. You may feel free to call me to discuss this matter in more
detail. If you do so, mention Law Guru and your first one hour of time will be free. Good luck!
