Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

boyfriend abandoned house

My boyfriend and I own a house (equally) the last 3 years. He has moved into his girlfirends house and has not lived at our home in over 90 days. He is now bringing his girlfriend over to cut the lawn once a month and then leaves. He also refuses to converse with me and when he does, it is only through email. He is still paying his 1/2 of the mortg. and household bills

What is the criteria for abandonment?

When can I legally change the locks?

We are trying to put the house on the market but he is being very difficult.

Re: boyfriend abandoned house

I am sorry to hear your situation. It is fairly common.

You have a huge problem. Not a little one, not a medium sized one. You need to sit down with a lawyer and get some advice and take action. If you do not, things will get worse.

He is not paying anything? He will not cooperate? You need some legal advice.

If you are in northern NJ, feel free to give me a call. I can speak to you on the telephone, but it will take more than just a brief telephone call to assist you with these issues.

Re: boyfriend abandoned house

I understand that now that he has another significant other you feel uncomfortable with his

returning "home" as though you were still a couple. If he will not sell the house voluntarily

you can file an action in Superior Court. He does understand that you no longer wish to tie your

economic wagon to his.

Perhaps a letter from an attorney will snap him out

of his mindset. As you have learned, living together unmarried makes things simpler but not always.

Call me if you like.
