Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

last name change of a minor

My question is I gave my son whose now 9 yrs old his fathers last name his father did sign the birth certificate but is not involved in my sons life and never was. He has never paid child support. We did go to court about 7 years ago for custody we have joint legal custody and the child resides with me. I did that incase he ever kidnapped him. But anyway lately my son has been writing my last name on his school papers and he asked if he could change his last name? How do I do this and do I need to contact his father for permission to change his last name? Thanks in advance for your help...

I have done several name changes for minors. You need a good reason (seems like your son may have), and the father does not care deeply. You should be able to get the name change through.

Call me if I can help.

You must have a name change done with

legal service upon the father. It is

not that difficult.

Call me if you like.
