Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

child rights

I just got married March 10th of this year to a man I have a 5 month old baby with. 2 nights last week we had the police at our door because of a domestic dispute. the officers told me that if we have no court papers that neither one of has any more rights. i need o know what i can do to make sure if we have another dispute i can take my child. i also need to know if need a divorce and a lawyer i can use. please help.
