As noted by the other attorney, the closer to 18 years old the more significant as to parenting issues. If a child is of sufficient age and maturity to articulate an intelligent preference, the court may consider but is not bound by the child's wishes. It also depends on the reasons of course and the fitness of the other parent. In addition, if the child is out of the shpere of influence of the parent, this may influence the obligation to pay support after the age of 18 years as well such for college expenses. After the age of seven, the court may on its own or upon the request of a party interview the child.

No real specific age, but the closer to 18 the child gets, the more power they have to make decision. However, you have to go to court to avoid violating court orders.
