Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey
Child support
My husband was divorced and has one child with his ex and his ex had a child prior to them being married. When they divorced my husband agreed to pay child support. The child in question is 17 and has choosen not to see my husband any longer. We want to stop paying child support and stop paying for his medical insurance. My husband has been in the childs life since he was 3 but, never adopted him. What odds do we have to be allowed to stop paying support?

Re: Child support
The answer will very much depend on what the husband agreed to at the time of the divorce. However, if he agreed to pay child support for his exwife's child, has paid it since age 3yrs old and now is age 17yrs, it is going to take a lot to convince a Judge to let him change that. When the child is emancipated (which varies depending upon the child's actions) then the husband should apply to terminate support. I would need to know a lot more to give any kind of advice on the 'chances' of success here.
