Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Child support issues: Can you please help answer the following question:

I am in New Jersey. My son plays bass at a Southern New Jersey grade school. The school makes one available for him to use at school: in music class, rehearsals and practice after school. My former wife wants to buy a bass for him to practice at home and wants me to pay for part of it. It is not part of our property settlement agreement. It is not specifically discussed in the New Jersey child support guidelines. What should I do?

According to the child support guidelines, extra-curricular activities are an included component, meaning that it is not mandatory for the person paying the child support to also contribute toward any extra curricular activities, absent a contrary requirement in the Property Settlement Agreement or a Court Order.

Keep in mind that this advice is based purely on the little bit of information that you have given to me. There certainly may be other factors that would change my opinion. Further, no one can rely on advice from an attorney who has not been retained. You will only be able to rely on advice from an attorney who you have actually retained. Good luck! Rob Gleaner
