Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Child Support for Unmarried Couples

My friend is pregnant with my child, and we do not plan to marry. Is there any way to avoid going to a lawyer to work out child support matters? If we are willing to share all responsibilities concerning the child, including financial, is there a need to have legal documents drawn up? Please advise...

hi - it's usually better to have the agreement properly drafted than to wing it. this protects both of you, as well as your unborn child. paying by check is another good idea, as is keeping all receipts, etc. feel free to call me at 609 263-0089 if you have any other questions. good luck !!

Re: Child Support for Unmarried Couples

In general, the only reason people ever need lawyers is when they cannot work things out amicably. Think about that. A world where everyone works things out on their own; lawyers would be out of business. A better place....I'll let you decide. The bottom line is that as long as the two of you understand each other and what needs to be done and paid, then there should be no problem. My experience, however, tells me that as much as you believe that you will be able to work things out, at some point in the future, things will fall apart and then you'll be at each other's throat, using lawyers to get back at each other. It seems to me that the better approach would be to at least put in writing your joint understanding as to what will be paid and who has responsibility for what. Then at least you will have something to work with. Keep in mind that this advice is based purely on the little bit of information that you have given to me. There may be other factors that would change my opinion. Further, no one can rely on advice from an attorney who has not been retained. Since you have not retained an attorney in this case, before you take any action, I really think that you should contact an attorney (either me or someone else) to discuss your matter in more detail. Only then will you be able to rely on the advice. I will be happy to assist you. However, you need to call me at 856-546-8010. If you mention LawGuru, there will be no charge for your first consultation. Good luck! Rob Gleaner
