Did you promise to give him $$ if you broke up with him?

You would likely not be obligated if you did not have an agreement with him to pay him some $$.

Good luck to you.

There is no common law marriage in New Jersey; you are not married.

If the house is in your name only and the mortgage is in your name only and you provided the downpayment and paid all mortgage payments he has a considerable problem proving that he is entitled to very much. Under other scenarios where he contributed to the downpayment and/or contributed to mortgage payment he has more of a claim. Your situation requires that we speak on the telephone so that I know your situation.
