can we change the status of joint custody to adoption? If so, how?

More explantion of the parties' relationships such as the circumstances of the order, the parent-child or step-parent status and the like. It appears that this may be a non-parent receiving custody of a child who now wishes to adopt. More information is imperitive to answering at all.
