Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey
Hi, My daughter is three years old already and I am just filing for child support. Her father has not been in her life. There was a FRO granted with no visitations to my daughter. What can I expect at this first hearing? Do I apply for back support or is that not an issue? Thank you in advance!!

The court will want to know about your financial circumstances and the father's financial circumstances. You'll be given a Case Information Statement to fill out with the financial information. If you don't know the father's current income, the court will want to know the father's work history. (For example, if he's an apprentice welder in NJ, or an electrician with 10 years' experience in PA.) You will likely be meeting with a hearing officer and not an actual judge, but the hearing officer can make a determination as to the child support amount and put it in an order that will be signed by a judge. If you are successful in obtaining a child support order, it will be retroactive to the date that you filed your application, not your daughter's birth.
