Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey
Dead Beat Dad Laws
I live in NJ and the father lives in CT. I have filed for Child support and he was paying up to Feb of 2001, then he lost his job, but has not been paying even though he was collecting unemployment. The state of CT is now involved but nothing has been done for 2 months other them saying that they don't have him registered as working. I wanted to know how long can he sit there doing nothing before the ''Dead Beat Dad'' laws come into effect?
Thanks!!

Re: Dead Beat Dad Laws
I suppose any law requiring non-payers to pay child support can be called "Dead Beat Dad" Laws. Laws take effect only when people put them into effect. If the state is moving too slow, you need to hire a lawyer in his home state to do for you what the state is not doing for you. Since it appears that you have not retained an attorney, before you take any further action, you should contact an attorney in the father's home state to discuss your matter in more detail. Only then will you be able to rely on the advice. Good luck! Rob Gleaner
