debt incurred before marraige

friend (male) getting married in NJ in March. Girl has incurred a very substantial educational debt. Does any responsibility fall on his shoulders for this debt during the marraige or, God forbid, if the marraige fails?

Re: debt incurred before marraige

Based only on what you are saying, I can give you this limited answer:

Debts owed by one spouse before marriage usually are not the liability of the other spouse after marriage.

However, this is not the end of the story. If they get divorced, then her debts may end up as a factor in dividing the assets and paying the debts. And there are other ways that her debts can affect him, of course. The simplest way is if her salary is spent entirely on paying back the student loans and she can not help pay for rent, utilities, car payments and other bills!
