Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Delinquent Renter

My 50 year old boyfriend moved into my 85 year old mother's house back in November of 2006 with all his stuff but has not paid any rent since December 2008. There is no written contract. He hasn't held a full-time job since March 2008. I have been asking him to move out but he refuses to do so and keeps saying, ''call the cops if you don't want me here''. Can I just change the locks the next time he goes out of the house for an extended period of time? Legally can we do this?

Re: Delinquent Renter

I assume this is your exboyfriend?

You need to sit down with a lawyer and get some help. New Jersey landlord-tenant law is complex and dangerous, and can cause you and your mother a lot of money and trouble if a Judge decides that you have done something wrong.

If you would like me to help you, please give me a call; I am in Hackensack (northern New Jersey). My contact information can be obtained from the links below, just click on the Attorney Profile link. Let my secretary know you found me through LawGuru.
