Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

end of child support, and college costs

I live in PA, my ex in NJ. I've been voluntarily paying child support for my daughter all along, and on time. She will be 18 in October, and will graduate from high school in June 2000. Does my obligation end in October, or June, and can my ex forcibly get money towards college expenses? I have never had a written agreement on anything, just a simple, uncontested divorce. I don't want to deny my daughter anything, but I want to know what the law is, and how soon I can end the payments to my ex. She does not need them. Thanks.

Re: end of child support, and college costs

In general, child support ends upon emancipation, which is not necessarily upon high school graduation. A court is empowered to order not only continued child support but also can require the payment of college expenses. The circumstances under which this would be worked out is very fact sensitive and you should consult with an attorney and go over all of the facts of your situation so that you are aware of the probabilities.
