Family Death

my friend is a minor and last year he lost his mother to cancer and his father only has months left to live. the only family he has is across the country. if he is still 17, when his father passes is there a way to legaly let him live with me, as a roomate? i will be 20 at this time. if not, what can he do to be legally independent, so he can live on his own if the time comes?

Your friend will, in addition to losing both parents, have to make his way in the world. There are MANY things to think about and arrange for as best as he can. I understand your question, but your friend and his mother should NOW sit down with an attorney and make some plans.
