can I file for custody in NJ even when my son's father lives in KY?

My boyfriend and I lived together for 4 year everyhting is on his name even do everything came out of a joint account. we have a 3yrs old son he forced me out of my house and I came to NJ with the only family I have. I'm a flight attendant and NJ is my base. I would like to know if I can get physical cutody of my son and if I have right to have half of our pocessions. Can I file in NJ?
