You can make an inquiry with the Family Part of the Superior Court of New Jersey in the county in which the divorce was granted. All you need are the names of the parties and the approximate time of the divorce and any record of a divorce should be in the computer of Superior Court.

He should have a copy of the divorce judgment; get that from him. Then call the Clerk of the Court for that County, and ask the Clerk to verify that the divorce is on record and truly took place.

And please, do not do anything that would put you at risk (like going through a marriage ceremony or putting assets or bank accounts into his name or with his name on them, to list just a few things that could end up hurting you) until you are very very very (did I say very enough) sure that first of all he is really divorced, and secondly that it really is necessary and really is a good idea to put his name on your account. Be careful!! Good luck to you.
