Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey
gold digger
A very distant young relative (living in Milwaukee)of my Father in law (lives in Whippany) has been sending letters suggesting that he pay for some of her expenses. She doesn't ask him directly for money,
but describes her ''lost job', sick child, car accident, etc, and always includes the dollar amount of her 'needs'. My Father in law has become quite involved with her, ; talking on the phone and writing letters.
He has sent her money two or three times. Now he wants to buy her a new car. We don't know what to do. He willl not believe that she is scamming him, and we can't convince him that
he should demand written backup for all her 'financial problems''. Is there any way we can legally protect him from her?
Thank you

Re: gold digger
I understand your concerns, and it does seem that your father in law is making some expensive choices.
What would you want an attorney to do?

I don't think there is much you can do unless you believe your father in law is incompetent and unable to manage his affairs. If you think a doctor may diagnose him as such then you could apply to the probate court for a conservatorship and take control of his money.
