Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey
How can my kids & I live on so little money?
Hi,
4 weeks ago I found my husband was having an affair. I kicked him out BUT in the end I asked him back but did not want to come back. We have 2 kids ages 2 & 9.
We went to a Mediator twice so far & I was appalled to find out that I my husband gets almost as much money as me and the kids. We can't get by on that. Why am I responsible for all the bills? (rent, car, insurance, cable etc.)as well as legal bills? I am a homemaker and do not make a salary. My husband makes 6 figures and w/alimony and child support I wind up with only $5,000 less than him per year! I do not understand this. Does this sound correct? My next step is to see an attorney with money I do not have unfortunately...shouldn't he have to pay? He is verbally abusive and has verbal violent outbursts. After all is said and done, there is no money to even but the kids clothes!
PLEASE HELP me with this.
Thanks soooo much!
ps-he plans on moving in with this 'girl'.

You sound as though you do not have an attorney representing in the divorce action. An attorney acts as your knight and fights for your best interests with an understanding of how the legal system works. You probably are suffering because you have no idea of how the legal system works.
You only need a retainer of perhaps $1,500.00 to hire an attorney because it appears your husband has all of the money and should be required to pay a substantial retainer to your new lawyer on your behalf pursuant to a court order obtained as a consequence of your new attorney requesting same on your behalf.
