Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Legal Custody/Support - Never Married Parents

I have a 9 year old daughter with someone to whom I have never been married. A few years ago, I went through the family court system in NJ to have paternity legally established. Prior to this, we have had no contact with the biological father or his family. Since then, we have established a good rapport with his family and recently with him as he was just recently released from jail. He seems somewhat eager to be a part of his daughter's life. I have 2 questions: 1) Did establishing paternity legally give him any legal custody of her automatically? I have been making decisions independent of him for 9 years. He also lives about an hour away from me...Should i be writing his name on school paperwork or anything else of that nature or is her stepfather ok? (that may be a dumb question, but i'm not sure) 2) i have not yet filed for child support since paternity was established. He was incarcerated at the time and now with him just being released he doesn't have consistent work as yet. I'm a homemaker. Should I just go ahead and file for support... I don't want to create any legal problems for him because I want him to be available for her... His What is the wise thing to do in this situation?
