Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

What is the maximum amount a parent has to contribute to a kid's college education? Went to court, court sent us to mediation, ex wants full support and half of college expenses which is 40 grand a year she want me to pay half. We make about the same money each about 50 grand a year. She wants to sue me for it. How much am I supposed to pay? I have a lawyer, he says I have to pay if the judge says so, even if I dont have the money. Dont make no kind of sense. How am I supposed to pay 20K a year on 35k take-home? I want my kid to go to college but isn;t there some kind of sense to fixing a limit based on the money the parents got? Shoud i take out loans? My lawyer says they could make me sell my house to pay whatever the judge says I should pay. That cant be right, can it?
