Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey
can i do this myself
I just got the paperwork for a reduction in child support. In June my husband just decided to up and move out of state. He now says he has a job making half of what he did here and wants a child support reduction. my children and me lost our healthcare covrage in june and he has not resumed it. I could only get coverage for my daughter thru New Jersey Kid care. I have to pay a high amount f thru my employer for mine and we are working on coverage for my son. My husband and I have been seperated a long time. How can he get this reduction since he just up and decided to move. why should my children suffer a change in lifestyle. My main question is can I write the letter to the judge stating all of this or should I let a lawyer do it for me. will it make that much of a difference? Please help me do the right thing. What are the chances he will get the reduction?

Hiring a lawyer is like paying someone to change your oil. You can do it yourself, but you might make a mistake which might cause you to have to replace the engine. If it is so vital a problem that you think of hiring a lawyer you should hire one.
The voluntary leaving of a job for a lessor job does not entitle your husband to a reduction in child support. Also, if he is no longer to provide health insurance because of his decision his obligation to provide same remains. If he gets screwed by choosing a lesser job that is a problem that he brought on himself.

I agree with Gary, you need to find a way to hire an attorney to review this matter. There are many areas to review and arguments to advance on your behalf that only an experienced lawyer can advance.

I agree with the other attorneys. I know too many people that have gone to family court without an attorney and ended up with really bad results. It happens all the time. I suggest you call up some family and see if they can help you. Some firms, such as ours, also accept credit cards so that may be another way for you to pay for an attorney.
