Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey
If a party has an attorney, should the other party have one too?
My hopefully soon to be ex husband and I are seeking a divorce (I'm filling for it because he is in the military stationed in Japan) and we had agreed that we would work out the details of the divorce. I went to We The People to get the papers drawn and he didn't agree to some of the wording used in the papers so he doesn't want to sign them. We finally agreed to everything but now he is saying that he is getting legal representation because he won't be present in court so he wants a lawyer to be there on his behalf. I'm afraid that by not being represented as well, it could hurt me in my day in court. Should I get an attorney as well and get represented or is it ok for him to have an attorney represent him the day of the court and I go alone. Can his attorney change anything in the papers we both have signed or what could happen if I go alone? We have two children togeter and he is agreeing to let me have sole physical custody but that wasn't always the case and I am afraid that his attorney can try to pull something to get my ex joined physical custody although he is active duty miliatry in the Navy traveling a lot. I need some serious help. Thanks

Yes, you should have an attorney. Haven't you heard the expression about people who represent themselves in court?

You seem to know that you need an attorney, but need to have someone tell what you already know. Hire an attorney. If you call me I will charge you a reasonable fee.
Call me if you like.

I would get an attorney. It seems practical in this case because it is somewhat complicated, and would definitely put your mind at ease.
What county are you talking about??
I practice in both PA and southern NJ, and charge reasonable rates for representation.
