Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

now responsible newspaper ad

About 10 yrs. ago a lawyer told me to put a ''not responsible ad for any debts except those of my own in the newspaper. This way I wouldn't be responsible for any of his bills after the article was published. Now I just went to a lawyer and he said he never heard such a thing and that it wouldn't hold any power. HELP! Thank you in advance.

Your question is lacking key details. What company could possibly be comming after you for 10+ year old debt? It just doesn't happen for a million reasons. If the debt was incurred after the divorce, then you aren't liable for it. I've never heard of such an ad and I don't see how it would work. The creditors are probably national companies so for them to see the ad in the local newspapers doesn't make much sense. Sounds like you are just getting some bad advice. I suggest you contact one of the attorneys on this board for some good advice.

Good luck!

Responsibility for debts acquired during marriage is determined during a divorce. Normally, the debt is split equally between the parties, but if his debt was incurred for non marital purposes, such as gambling or a girlfriend you may be able to avoid paying for it.

This answerr is based on my understanding that this question is asked in a matrimonial context.
