Re: rights of adult child of unmarried mother

I am not aware of any law which would obligate the father to provide her with any information whatsoever. On the other hand, now that she is an adult, it seems to me that you could provide her with the information concerning his whereabouts and let her talk to him. If he is reasonable, especially after this long passage of time, I would think that he would voluntarily give any necessary medical information. Further, he may be interested in establishing a relationship with her and her children. You, on the other, should stay out of the situation. It is apparent that you and he did not have a good situation at the time; there seems to me to be no reason for you to have any involvement in your daughter's situation in that it could only harm what your daughter is trying to accomplish. Keep in mind that this advice is based purely on the little bit of information that you have given to me. There may be other factors that would change my opinion. Further, no one can rely on advice from an attorney who has not been retained. Since it appears that neither you nor your daugther have retained an attorney, before she takes any action, she may want to contact an attorney (either me or someone else) to discuss the matter in more detail. Only then will she be able to rely on the advice. I will be happy to assist her. However, she needs to call me at 856-546-8010. If she mentions LawGuru, there will be no charge for the first consultation. Good luck! Rob Gleaner
