Tell the attorney about your situation and listen carefully to his explanation of how he would represent your best interests; note how well he actually listens to you and understands your situation and explains how the law operates favorably or unfavorably in respect to your attaining your goals and satisfying your needs.

Re: How to select an attorney
I have read what the other attorney wrote, and as usual, Gary is on point.
Also, ask: how much of the attorney's time is spent on divorce? how many cases has the attorney actually taken to trial (not just handled, but actually proved up the case in front of the Judge)? what kind of fees, not just hourly, but also a general and not binding estimate (ball-park estimate) of the costs.
there is a lot more to ask about, but you should be comfortable with the attorney, should be sure that the attorney knows what he/she is doing, and you will be able to work with the lawyer for the many months it will take.
Call if you like; I never charge for a first phone call.
You can then decide how you would like to proceed.
