Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Shared income to pay monthly debt

My wife earns 3 times as much money per month as I do. Yet, she only gives me enough cash to pay 40% of the monthly bills. I have depleted my savings and borrowed from a heloc to pay the monthly bills. The amount she gives me is less than 50% of her monthly income. Do I have any recourse (other than divorce) to force her to provide more income?

It sounds like you would divorce your wife but something it preventing you from doing that. I suggest an attorney and talk this out. There is rarely a reason not to file. The longer you wait, the worse it may be for you.

Re: Shared income to pay monthly debt

I understand all of what you have said, and I must say that I am deeply troubled to hear this. Clearly, there are some things very very wrong in your marriage. Have you tried discussing this with her? Marital counselling?

What she is forcing you to do is destroy your assets, while she saves more for herself.

You have some recourse, there are other legal avenues than divorce. They are not often used. Call me if you would like to discuss.

However, I suggest to you that there are serious, serious problems here.

You have not mentioned children. Do you have any children? If you do (I would guess that you do not) then there are additional huge issues to discuss.

I think you need to consult with an attorney, explain in detail what your situation is, and get some advice.

Please call my office if you would like my assistance. I would be happy to speak to you on the telephone, but it will take more than just a brief telephone call to assist you with these issues.
