Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

CAn I take my son out of state? I live in Ohio and want to move to CA. I have sole custody of my son. There is no "set" visitation wityh his father, It is "when mutually agreed upon". He is against any move that I make away from the area. My question is: Can I leave the state without his permission. I would pay for all visits my son would make to see his father and would allow him to see him on all school breaks. I'm not trying to keep him from him, I just need to be closer to my family (in CA)
