spouse co-signed mortgage w/o consult

A woman discovers that her spouse co-signed on a mortgage for his daughter without consulting his wife. The wife is disabled, the husband retired 5 years, and their daughter is about to beging college. How can the wife protect herself and dissociate herself from this potential debt? (There is a reason her stepdaughter and he huisband are unable to get credit themselves; additionally, the stepdaughter has borrowed large amounts of money before that were 'forgiven' and which were also made unbeknownst to the wife at the time of transaction.)
