Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Stepchild adoption

My ex has been out of my childrens lives for about 6 years now, by choice. I divorced him 3 years agao and was granted a divorce by default because he was no where to be found.. I married again about 2 years agao and my new husband wants to adopt my kids. My question is does the court take into consideration that he abandoned them being that he has made no contact in 6 years, and will it be an easier process because of abandonment. Also what if we cant find him to sign over his rights. I mean as I states earlier I was granted a divorce by default. Can someone please help me try and understand all of this

Parental rights can be abandoned where parental obligations are abandoned for years. That is your situation.
