stepparent adoption

My husband would like to adopt my 4 yr old son.my son's biological father is not listed on birth certificate and disappeared while i was still pregnant-i wouldn't even know where to find him.what do we have to do legally to have my husband adopt my son?does the biological father even have parental rights since he is not named anywhere?
