Isn't the larger question "what do I need to do to become the responsible father that I want to be?" You need to file a custody application (including a paternity application if she hasn't put you on the birth certificate). You will ask, in the application, for the parenting time schedule that you want and also ask the Court to establish a proper child support amount. Both you and the mother will be required to provide income information for that determination. The application needs to be filed in the county where the mom lives. Your best bet is to consult with an attorney on this for the best result.

Keep in mind that this advice is based purely on the little bit of information that you have given to me. There certainly may be other factors that would change my opinion. Further, no one can rely on advice from an attorney who has not been retained. You will only be able to rely on advice from an attorney who you have actually retained. Good luck! Rob Gleaner

This is a common situation. You have a lot to do, because you are the father of that child.

Part of your job as father is to care for and raise the baby.

You should talk to a lawyer about how to get this to happen.

If things work well, then you may not need to go to court to get that to happen.

Another part of your job as father is to pay for the costs of raising that child. That probably means child support.

Again, a lawyer can help you deal with this issue.

You have many years ahead of you. Enjoy every minute of it.

And get a good lawyer, now.
