unmarried father want's primary custody of todler

My son's mother let me recently and I am concerned about my son because I see changes in him since he has been spending time at his mother�s home. His mother has a drinking problem and has gone to meetings, but stopped. She is drinking again. Once when I had to return him to her, she was nowhere to be found. I called all over looking for her and was forced to leave him with my parents.

When he was born I moved into a more suitable house for him, with better schools for his future. We split up before & I wanted custody, but was told I stood no chance because he was an infant. I fear for my child. His mother has been drinking, staying out all hours and seems to be neglecting him. He cries when I leave him and he asks me about his mommy as if he does not see her. I am in the proper financial situation to care for him. My house is a better environment for him than her family�s apartment. She lost her job. She has a drinking problem and my son is full with questions about her. He is always happy when he is with me. Do I stand a chance at gaining primary custody of him?
