Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Will New Jersey court accept Judgment from other states?

If divorce had been finalized (there is a Notice of Entry of Judgment)in the different state, will New Jersey court accept that? or it depends on the county?

You have to petition the New Jersey court to obtain a "sister state" judgment. Once you have that judgment, it then becomes a New Jersey judgment and you can execute on assets, property or persons in the state of New Jersey. Good luck and thanks for inquiring.

Re: Will New Jersey court accept Judgment from other states?

New Jersey will recognize the fact of a legal divorce from anywhere, as to the termination of the marriage. Nothing need be done. If you want to get remarried in NJ for example, you certainy could.

However, if you are looking to enforce or modify the property, support or custody terms of the foreign divorce judgment, no lawyer would have enough information, based exclusively on the facts you present, to answer the question completely.

Yours could be a UIFSA matter (Uniform Interstate Family Support Act Case), for instance. It may not be.

You will need to consult with legal counsel for particulars.

The United States Constitution requires that each state give full faith and credit to the judgments of other states. The judgment must be properly certified and authenticated. You should call my office at 800 273 7933 if you need assistance.
