Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Jersey

Adjournment

I am involved in a non-jury trial which has been set for March 17th. I have a previous engagement on that day that I do not want to cancel. I am aware that I can request an adjournment with the agreement of the opposing party. However, I can not get opposing council on the phone. I am also aware that I can request an adjournment without their consent but what I need to know is what to I tell the court. I don't think the Judge will care that I have plans I do not want to cancel. What is my best approach for an adjournment.

Re: Adjournment

Write the judge and advise that you want an adjournment and why and further advise that you have been unable to contact the other party's attorney. Send a copy of the letter to the judge to the other party's attorney and do it NOW.

Secondly, since you clearly do not have a clue about how the Court functions you need to hire an attorney.

Call me if you like.
