Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Jersey

back in Aug. or Sept 2010 i received a notice that i was getting sued small claims court for a vehicle that i sold earlier that year, i sought legal advice about this notice and if should respond back and how, but i was told not to answer the complaint because you will have your day in court if i do or do not write back. i did what the lawyer told me, i didn't respond back to the notice instead i waited for the court to issue me a court date to appear in court. months went by and i received nothing from the court. i recently moved out the country i no longer live in the US. just recently my sister who still lives at my old residency received a judgement notice to pay the amount i was being sued for. but what was odd was that i was never received anything to appear in court. my sister called the court on my behalf regarding some info and why i was never issued a court date. they told her that a date was issued and should have been notified by the suing party. but i never received anything regarding this matter. now the court has sent someone to old residence with a judgement to pay or to appear in court. what do i do regarding this matter. do i need to be there to resolve this matter or can it be resolved without me being there.
