Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Jersey
change spelling of first name
On my birth certificate, my first name is spelled Joanne but I have always used the spelling--name removed--(58 yrs). I now need a passport and, except for my birth certifcate, all other documentation is in name
--name removed--( drivers lic, marriage cert, soc sec ).Do I need to legally change the name on my birth certificate?

you should file for a legal name change with the courts. You can then bring the name change order with you on your travels to prove your name.
Re: change spelling of first name
It is really a simple matter. Just do a name change petition to be filed with the Superior Court of New Jersey;
publish a notice of the proposed name change in The Record and obtain an Order changing your first name. The
Order and an appropriate form are then sent to the Department of Vital Statistics of the State where you were born and a revised birth certificate, bearing your first name as you usually spell it will be issued.
Give me a call if you like.
